Jesus came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets not to destroy them.

“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” Matthew 5:17

The most important of the Law and Prophets that our Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled is when He shed His blood on the Cross for the remission of sin, “And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission…Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—In the volume of the book it is written of Me—To do Your will, O God.’ ”Hebrews 10:7, Hebrews 9:22

Everything that is written about Jesus Christ in the Old Testament, from Genesis through Malachi, is called the “scarlet cord”. It’s scarlet because it represents the blood that Jesus shed on the Cross to atone for sins and unbelief. For example, when Adam and Eve sinned, they sewed fig leaves together to cover their nakedness, to cover the exposure of their sin. The Lord said fig leaves were not adequate for covering their exposure, so He made them coverings from an animal’s skin, Genesis 3:7, 21 That was the first animal sacrifice to atone for sin. In Isaiah 53, the prophecy is given of the suffering of Jesus Christ upon the Cross to atone for sin by His own flesh, as the Lamb of God. In Malachi 3:1, the prophecy of the Messenger of the Covenant is given, which is Jesus Christ as the New Covenant, which is this, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16

The laws of animal sacrifices within the law of Moses were established by God for one purpose, to point to His Son Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God Who would atone for sin, not just for the Jewish people, but for the whole world. When Jesus died on the Cross, the sins of the world died with Him, for all who believes in Him. Since He fulfilled the law in that way, the law of animal sacrifices is no longer needed, as described in Hebrews 10.

Also, the law of circumcision was given as a sign of the promise God made to Abraham to multiply his descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, “…and you will be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.” Genesis 17:11. When Jesus Christ came, that promise was fulfilled so circumcision is no longer a law that needs to be kept, “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Galatians 3:29

No one should ever think that the Law or the Prophets of the Old Testament are meaningless today…Jesus came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, not to destroy them.

“For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” Matthew 5:18

Our Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled the prophecy spoken of Him when he gave His life on the Cross to reconcile us to God by the forgiveness of sin through repentance of unbelief. But there are many more prophecies alive within the pages of the Old Testament and not one jot or one tittle will pass away until all of them are fulfilled. The prophecies of the Old Testament will be active until heaven and earth passes away, as described in the post on the Day After the Battle of Armageddon from Ezekiel 39. Then there are the books of the very familiar prophets, such as Zachariah, and also Zephaniah, and also Daniel, an also Ezekiel, and also Isaiah, etc. The Prophets of the Old Testament are still active today!

“Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:19

The commandments that Jesus is talking about are very much different than what the scribes and Pharisees were teaching people to live by. “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:20 Jesus was teaching about an internal righteousness flowing from the heart and soul of a person, not the external righteousness that was only skin deep, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.” Matthew 23:27-28

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they will be My people.” Hebrews 8:10

Today, there is a huge problem of the word of God not being taught in a way that points to Jesus Christ as the way to God, who forgives sin and gives eternal life. Every prophecy of the Old Testament is being corrupted and broken, and the New Testament is being turned into something that is a totally different gospel than the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Nowadays, people hardly even associate the name of Jesus with the Cross and eternal life but through Him people are being taught to join with the community culture to do a lot of good works and charitable deeds. By departing from the Holy Bible to partner with community goals, a partnership is being formed with the beast that gives people what to say, do, think, and feel. The culture of the beast is formed as the word of God is corrupted. Whoever causes people to abandon belief in God, reject Jesus Christ, and to oppose the presence of the Holy Spirit are the least in the eyes of those who inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.” Matthew 23:15

In the days of Jesus, the Jewish people were considered to be those of the kingdom of heaven, as quoted, “But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness.” Matthew 8:12 Those of the kingdom of heaven who did not keep the commandments of God, would be considered the least among the Jewish people.

Great are those who teach people to live by the whole Bible, from Genesis to Revelations who encourage belief in God the Creator, who encourages people to acknowledge Jesus as the Christ and their Lord, and who encourages others to welcome the presence of the Holy Spirit.

What would happen if we taught people to rip the Bible in two between the Old and New Testaments then to throw away the Old Testament? In that event, the New Testament would hardly make any sense because a huge portion of the New Testament contains passages from the Old Testament. The New Testament contains about 250-343 direct quotations from the Old Testament, and over 1,000 references that allude to the Old Testament. For example, when Babylon is mentioned in the New Testament, it alludes to the many times that Babylon is mentioned in the Old Testament. A direct quote would be like what is written in Acts 2:17-21 from Joel 2:28-32.

  1. Amen – a true word (rare in our day).

“That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
    Romans 8:4

The Law is spiritual (Romans 7:14), and it requires a people who walk in the Spirit to fulfill it. The provision is given in the Person of Jesus Christ. A false gospel robs God’s word of its power and renders His church compromised and dim.
