“Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.” And His disciples heard it.” Mark 11:12-14
As stated in Mark 11:11, the “they” in that verse are the twelve Apostles, which would have included Judas Isacariot, before he betrayed Jesus. The “next day” refers to the day after Christ Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on the donkey, not a stallion, which is referred to as the “Triumphant Entry”. Everyone welcomed Him, and cried out, “Hosanna!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” Mark 11:9-10 Jesus saw that the hour was already late and He and the twelve Apostles went to Bethany, as stated in Mark 11:11.
Today, we know Jesus has come to this world in triumph over sin and death when He gave his life on the Cross to atone for sin and was resurrected from the grave after three days. Jesus triumphantly says to us, “Because I live, you will live also.” John 14:19 Today, the hour is late, and Jesus is far from the hearts and minds of today’s culture, which is global. Jesus is hungry. He is hungry for righteousness, Holiness, belief in His Father God, belief in His testimony, and belief in the presence of the Holy Spirit. As our Lord Jesus is kept at a distance by those of this world, He sees from afar.
Christ Jesus sees from afar a fig tree having leaves, so He goes to see if He would find something on it, but He finds nothing but leaves, it was not the season for the fruit of figs. Jesus said to fruitless tree, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.”
Jesus Christ sees the nations and peoples of today that have green leaves. They are the green leaves of good works, service, humanitarian principles, hatred for violence and guns, liveliness, and prosperity. Churches have the green leaves of large congregations, music and singing, wealth of community connections, wealthy in ways of this world, and other such green leaves. But where is the fruit? Where is the fruit of repentance towards God through Jesus Christ? Where is the fruit of the Holy Spirit? Our Lord Jesus said we would know them by their fruit, not by their leaves. A tree with leaves but no fruit is describing those “…having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!” 2 Timothy 3:5. Fruit is for the purpose of feeding the body, and the fruit of the Spirit is to feed the spirit and soul. Fruit of the Spirit nourishes belief in God the Creator, nourishes the testimony of Jesus Christ for the remission of sin, and nourishes life in the presence of the Holy Spirit.
We are living in a time that is not the season for fruit. We live in a cold and fruitless world where people are cold-hearted towards the fruit of the Holy Spirit. They choose to live by the beast that gives them the green leaves of what to say, do, think, and feel. They have the green leaves of uncanny knowledge, heightened intuition, extraordinary skills and talents, amazing physical abilities, uncanny authority over others, fabricated emotional responses, etc. But that is not the season for the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Today is the season of the beast that gives breath/life to the image of the beast to speak by speaking and living through people. By what they are given to say and do, they are conformed to the mark, name, number of the beast.
Our Lord Jesus says to this world, a world that thrives on having green leaves but no fruit, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.” No fruit will ever again be eaten from the culture of the beast, which is global. They reject the fruit of the Holy Spirit, and there is no forgiveness for blaspheme against the Holy Spirit, “…he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation”— ” Mark 3:29
“And the scribes and chief priests heard it and sought how they might destroy Him; for they feared Him, because all the people were astonished at His teaching. When evening had come, He went out of the city.” Mark 11:18-19
Today, those who govern and live for the beast that gives them what to say, do, think, and feel, intend to destroy the testimony of Jesus Christ. They don’t like being warned that their green leaves are not worth anything if the fruit of the Holy Spirit is not there. For that reason, they shut the door to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to we who have the Gospel of Christ written on our heart through our born-again experience, and to every aspect of Christianity. In the evening of this world, when the fruit of the Holy Spirit is thought of as not being necessary, Jesus exits from the global city of this world.
Jesus is the giver of the Holy Spirit and when the Holy Spirit is taken from this world, lawlessness is no longer restrained, “For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.” 2 Thessalonians 2:7-8 Click for a post on the “lawless one”.
“Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.” Marl 11:20-21
As followers of Jesus Christ in today’s world, we are already starting to see the root rot of the tree that has no fruit but plenty of green leaves. We think of green leaves as being a sign of life in a tree, but a fruit tree without fruit isn’t useful. We see the root rot setting into that global tree of green leaves through global warming. The global government and its global culture are already struggling with extreme heat and climate change of all types. Global warming is the Fourth Plague of Revelations 16:8-9. Global warming contributes to furthering the root rot as it is instrumental in plunging the power center of the beast into darkness, which happens in the Fifth Plague of Revelations 16:10-11. That leads to further deterioration when the Battle of Armageddon comes in the Sixth Plague of Revelations 16:12-16. Our Lord Jesus Christ returns in the Day of the Lord, as described in Zachariah 14, which comprises the Seventh Plague of Revelations 16:17-21 with the Seventh Trumpet of Revelations 11:15-19.
The green planet of the global culture, their earthly Garden of Eden, is described in this way, “A day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, like the morning clouds spread over the mountains. A people come, great and strong, the like of whom has never been; Nor will there ever be any such after them…A fire devours before them, and behind them a flame burns; The land is like the Garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; Surely nothing shall escape them.” Joel 2:2-3
“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’
“I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25, 3:11
