“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.”

“The voice said, “Cry out!” and he said, “What will I cry?” Isaiah 40:6a

As revealed in the next verses, the message we bring to others is that we human beings face death, but our Lord Jesus Christ is eternal. Through Him, we are resurrected from the grave and receive eternal life in the New Jerusalem. Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he will live. And whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25-26 Our answer must be, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

“All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, because the breath of the Lord blows upon it; Surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:6a-8

Through the Holy Spirit, Peter quotes those verses of Isaiah, “Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, because “All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, But the word of the Lord endures forever.” 1 Peter 1:22-25

The beauty and every pleasant thing of the flesh that this world has to offer is just like the flower of the field. And all flesh is just like the grass. The grass withers, meaning all flesh ages and eventually dies. The flower fades away, meaning that all the pleasant and loveliness of the flesh eventually fades away. Why does that happen? Because the Holiness of the Lord’s breath blows on it. Humanity has inherited sin into our human nature, and no sin can live in the presence of God. Adam and Eve were created to live forever, but when they disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit, sin and death entered the world. As a result, everyone has the sentence of death within us, “Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead,” 2 Corinthians 1:9

We have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God, so who can stand in His presence as His children? Whoever believes in His Son Jesus Christ, who is the Word made flesh, and the Word of God stands forever. When God sees Jesus in us, He considers us righteous, and for His Son’s sake we are spared from eternal condemnation in Hell.  
“The righteousness of God is through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” Romans 3:22–24

Because Jesus is eternal, the eternal Word of God, by believing in Him our flesh will be raised incorruptible from the grave into eternal life, “The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.” 1 Corinthians 15:42-45 Our Lord Jesus is that last Adam, the sinless Adam who did not forfeit eternal life through disobedience to God.
