It happens constantly. My Debit Card is the CHIP kind that pushes into the card reader and doesn’t need to be slid through. It happens at Subway when I try to buy a meal, happens at Speedway when I pick up a snack, and I would say it happens just about everywhere. The response from the employees seems to be the same everywhere, with a little alarm and shock in their voice they say, “You must have a CHIP.” They seem to be implicating something from within myself that isn’t in-synch to what they believe it should be.
I have a CHIP card, but it seems like there is a problem with it quite frequently! Who doesn’t have a CHIP reader card nowadays. The employees try a couple times to get it to work, with a pretentious demeanor, and seems to be referring more to me than the card. They fail after trying to get my CHIP to work, then they call the manager who pushes a button to get it to work. The manager, whoever it is, acts like they just performed a miracle. So, I guess it’s for them to get the CHIP to function and for me to be grateful for a CHIP that functions.
I think it is obvious to everyone that the thoughts popping into our heads, and the feelings that motivate our behavior are not going to be controlled by a CHIP reader. Who really believes that a plastic card, or a microchip under our skin, or anywhere else, is all of a sudden going to have dominion over the much more complex “computer” that controls our thoughts, behavior, words, and feelings? If my CHIP doesn’t work, perhaps it’s only because my thoughts and behaviors don’t conform to the present standards of this world. Really, Romans 12:2 makes it clear that as the world progresses with their own thought processes and behavior, the thoughts and behavior of those who follow Jesus will be a lot different; “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

We might wonder about a computer chip being implanted in the human body as part of all of this. When people speak of a computer chip implant, they are envisioning a way that personal information is linked to datacenters to control buying and selling. They envision a chip that is scanned to reveal information relevant to buying and selling. If the mark of the beast is just something for scanning information into a datacenter, a person’s fingerprint would be much better at doing that. Fingerprints hold more information about who we really are than anything else. Today, we are being acclimated to using our fingerprint to login to our cellphones, computers, and other technological devices. The mark of the beast is much more than just a way to scan information into datacenters; it reaches into our head and in what we do.
