“Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “Why have you done this?” For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us?”—for the sea was growing more tempestuous. And he said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.” Jonah 1:10-12
Jesus fled from the teaching of the corrupt church of His day [the synagogue], in order to bring people to God by the forgiveness of sin [from within the heart, through the Spirit]. The Jewish culture was in tumult because many came to believe in Jesus. The Pharisees and chief priests said, “If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.” John 1:48 “Then the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to Pilate. And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow perverting the nation …they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.” Luke 23:1-2, 5
Our Lord Jesus gave the answer to the question, “What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us?” That answer is this, “Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him…Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:23, 27
Jesus knew that the only way for the people of the world to have peace within themselves and in this world, would be for Him to be picked up and thrown overboard. That is to say, our Lord Jesus knew that He would have to be crucified on the Cross [as atonement for sin] to calm the tumultuous storms of the soul [as seen in this tumultuous world]. “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.” John 10:17-18
Jesus gave the answer to the question, “Why have you done this?” Jesus knew the Jewish culture would be shaken up and thrown into turmoil because they were walking away from the laws of the Old Testament and learning to live for God, by the Spirit living within their heart and soul. He plainly said so, “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.” Matthew 10:34
“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
“I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25, 3:11
