Being born-again comes by the Spirit not through written words

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” Galatians 5:1

The bondage Paul speaks of is the burden of the laws of Judaism [and other such policies and requirements of today]. The liberty in Christ refers to living in the Spirit, “For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” Romans 8:3-4

When Christ came to abolish the law, it was to bring all of humanity together, beginning with the two groups including the Jewish people and non-Jewish. They were to be brought together in the name of Jesus. That is what Paul, by the Holy Spirit, was describing to the Galatians. As quoted in Ephesians, “For [Christ] Himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in His flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in Himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which He put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.” Ephesians 2:14-18

“Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing.” Galatians 5:2

To be circumcised would be to revert to the requirements of the written word and turning away from the freedom within the Spirit by faith in God through Jesus Christ, “…the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23-24 When we share the Gospel of Christ, we are sharing a personal experience about being born-again instead of sharing a bunch of written verses. The Gospel written on our heart is worth more than every letter ever printed.

“And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. Galatians 5:3-4

For the Galatians to submit to the Jewish leader’s demand for them to be circumcised would obligate them to keep every single one of the laws of Judaism. That would have alienated them from being justified by Christ because they were trying to be justified by the letter of the law. Grace is not keeping a bunch of rules, memorizing a lot of verses, and going to church every Sunday, grace is believing God through Jesus Christ and living by the Holy Spirit. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

“For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.” Galatians 5:5-6

As far as our relationship to Christ Jesus is concerned, it doesn’t matter whether we are circumcised or not. But what matters is a faith that expresses itself through love. Our hope of righteousness comes through the Spirit by faith.

“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25
, 3:11
