“And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel;” Ezekiel 17:1-2
As followers of Jesus Christ, we realize that most people in this world do not know the Bible, or don’t want to hear scriptures spoken to them. The best we can do is to speak in parables so that those who follow the ways of this world can understand. Parables are basically using the knowledge of this world to explain a spiritual truth. Jesus Christ used parables to “…utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world.” Matthew 13:35 Even then, people are not able to hear, or understand, the spiritual meaning of parables.
God gave Ezekiel parables because the Israelites were far removed from caring about the word of God. He needed to get the Israelites to listen and understand their fate after turning away from God. The Holy Spirit uses the parables of the Bible to teach us spiritual truth so that we can grow in God through Jesus Christ.
