“O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with luxury; Who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.” 2 Samuel 1:24
The Israelites wanted a king, which was against the will of God, so He gave them Saul, who ended up being spiritually wicked. “Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. 1 Samuel 8:4-7
Saul led the Israelites down a worldly path and clothed them with worldly prestige and luxury, He even led opposition against David (a man beloved by God from his childhood). To weep over Saul teaches us to always be respectful of those in authority.
As followers of Jesus Christ, He clothes us with prestige and luxury of Salvation and the infilling of the Holy Spirit. We mourn over the wickedness in this world, and avoid the spirit of anger, frustration, and vengeance. Christianity is the daughter of Israel, and we mourn for the Jewish people who have rejected Jesus Christ as their king, but instead chose to have their own king within the State of Israel.
Christianity is the offspring of Israel (one could say we are the daughters of Israel), and we are to mourn for the fatal condition of the State of Israel (like the daughters of Israel are called to mourn over Saul). Afterall, by being a branch on the family tree of Israel, we are clothed in scarlet and adorned with gold. Jesus Christ was a Jew and an Israelite from the Tribe of Judah. Through Him, we have been made a royal people and adorned with gold by being adopted into the family of God. “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;” 1 Peter 2:9
The family connection Christianity has with Israel is that some of the Jewish nation was broken off so that we could be grafted into the family tree. For example, the Pharisees who rejected Jesus Christ was broken off, but David, and all the men of God in the Old Testament are not broken off. Because the Jewish nation rejected Jesus as their Messiah, we were made part of the family of God because we accept Him. “And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.” Romans 11:17-18
As followers of Jesus Christ, we are to mourn over the fatal situation of the State of Israel in today’s world.
“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’
“I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25, 3:1
