This is a little background on Jacob, Joseph, and the growth of the Israelites in Egypt.

“Now Jacob dwelt in the land where his father was a sojourner, in the land of Canaan. This is the history of Jacob.” Genesis 37:1-2.

Jacob’s father was Isaac, and they both lived in Canaan, but Jacob lived there after his father died. Canaan is the name of the promised land, but this is over 100 years before the Israelites escaped Egypt and entered Canaan. They entered Canaan through Jericho, which is way up north from where Jacob lived. During the time of Jacob, there were no Israelites enslaved in Egypt, and there was only Jacob, his twelve sons and their children who lived a few miles from Egypt. It was during this time that Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers and eventually became a very powerful ruler in the Egyptian government. He was second in command under Pharoah. Joseph was the only Israelite in Egypt at that time. Eventually, Joseph called all of his family and relatives to come to Egypt to live, which brought the total to seventy Israelites in Egypt. After Jospeh and all of his brothers died, the Israelites continued to multiply and became very numerous. That is when the succeeding Pharoah enslaved them, and they were severely oppressive. That is when Moses entered and the exodus from Egypt began.

Exodus 1:1-11 explains that,

“Now these are the names of the children of Israel who came to Egypt;
each man and his household came with Jacob:
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
All those who were descendants of Jacob were seventy persons (for Joseph was in Egypt already).
And Joseph died, all his brothers, and all that generation.
But the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, multiplied and became very numerous;
and the land was filled with them. Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.
And he said to his people, “Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we;
come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war,
that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land.”
Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens.”

Like Joseph, Jesus Christ brought a bad report against His Jewish “brothers“. Jesus Christ came to feed the flock by revealing Himself as being the long-awaited Messiah of the Jewish people. With Jesus, the Pharisees and Sadducees were also feeding the flock, but in an erroneous way. Jesus was Jewish, so His “brothers” were the Jews, and the Holy Spirit explains that to us through Joseph, “Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers.” Genesis 37:1 As we know, the Jewish “brothers” detested the teachings of Christ and they plotted to get rid of Him. Jesus was constantly bringing a bad report against the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Jewish unbelievers, and Joseph represents that, “And the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to his father.” Genesis 37:2 Joseph was one of two biological sons of Jacob and Rachel, his brothers were surrogate births, as Bilhah gave birth to Dan and Naphtali, while Zilpah gave birth to Gad and Asher (Genesis 30). They were the four brothers whom Joseph was feeding the flock with.

The names of those evil sons have significance for the last days, “And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days:” Genesis 49:1

  1. Dan is referred to as a judge who is like a serpent and a viper on a pathway, who bites horses heels to make the rider fall backwards.
  2. Naphtali is like a deer let loose who uses beautiful words.
  3. Gad refers to a troop which will tramp on him, but he will triumph at last.
  4. Asher refers to his bread which is rich and yields royal dainties.

The last days meaning of Joseph corresponds to Jesus Christ, Joseph is a Holy Spirit representation of Jesus. He is a fruitful main part of a tree, whose branches run over the wall. The Salvation of Jesus breached the Jewish wall and came to the whosoever. He is constantly being grieved by the bitter archers who hate Him, like Christians today who suffer the attacks of hurtful words and actions. He remains strong by the Almighty God like the Holy Spirit who strengthens us today. He is called the shepherd, the “Stone of Israel”. God is His help, and He is blessed with blessings from above, like the Holy Spirit filled Christians of today. Those blessing flow from within as the temple of the Holy Spirit. His blessings far exceed any of the previous ancestors of the Jewish lineage. His blessings are eternal, and He will wear the royal crown. He is separate from His Jewish “brothers.”

Even today, we see the elements of the last days are on us. When Jesus Christ came to make atonement for sin, He conquered sin and death. In these last days, those who govern by the mark of the beast has been given authority to overcome the people of God, everyone except whose names is written in the Lambs’ Book of Life. In the end, we will have the final victory. The world is filled with people who use beautiful words, they even sound churchy, and are compatible with the words of humanism empowered by the mark of the beast. They even thrive on physical pleasures, money, and possessions which are their royal dainties. Within their mind and heart is judgment like a viper and serpent who bites everyone in their path to make them fall away. Those are the elements that plotted against Joseph, and are the elements that plotted to kill Jesus, and are the elements that bring persecution to the followers of Jesus Christ.

Like Joseph, Jesus Christ was despised for the special favor of God shown to Him. Jesus Christ is the only Son of God, as said here, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 He is the beloved Son of God. Joseph was one of the two biological sons of Jacob, and Jacob loved Joseph more than all his other surrogate sons, “Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age.” Genesis 37:3a. God gave Jesus Christ special recognition over the Pharisees, Sadducees, Scribes, and the other unbelieving Jews. He wore the heavenly clothing of the Holy Spirit and not the carnal earthly clothing. Jacob made Joseph a tunic of many colors, which was a symbol of nobility and special favor and very prestigious over the standard shepherd’s clothing. “Also he made him a tunic of many colors.” Genesis 37:3b. The leaders of the Jewish nation despised Christ for the special favor of God shown to Him through the masses of people that followed Him. He was treated like nobility by the masses as He brought forgiveness of sin and the promise of eternal life. However, His “brothers” never spoke peaceably with Him, as happened to Joseph by his brothers, “But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.” Genesis 37:4

Like Joseph, Jesus made His destiny clear to the Jews and the world. The Jewish “brothers” of Jesus couldn’t stand to hear His parables, they could perceive that the His words were spoken against them. That’s the way it happened when Joseph told his brothers he had a dream to share with them, “Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more.” Genesis 37:5 Jesus made it clear that all of His Jewish “brothers” would bow to Him in the presence of God, like Joseph told his brothers, “So he said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed, your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.” Genesis 37:6-7 Jesus continually implied that He was the Son of God in front of the chief leaders of the churches, and they responded in the exact same way that the brothers of Joseph reacted, “And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.” Genesis 37:8 Jesus Christ had authority over the powers of the night, the day, and of the eleven other tribes of Israel (Jesus was of the tribe of Judah). Also, Joseph would become the most powerful ruler over all of Egypt, and would rule over his eleven brothers, second only to Pharoah, and he made that known, “Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.” Genesis 37:9

Like Joseph, the earthly father and mother of Jesus Christ kept His destiny in mind. The New Testament quotes Mary, the mother of Jesus, that she kept the events and words of Jesus hidden in her heart. Not much is said about Joseph, His earthly father. If she repeated what was said by Jesus Christ, it would be considered blaspheme so I imagine both parents kept the matter in their mind. At one time, Mary rebuked Jesus for wandering off into the temple and having discussion with the Pharisees and Sadducees without permission. He was of the age twelve and He responded that He had to be about His Father’s business, implying that He was the Son of God. Jewish leaders would have considered that to be blaspheme, so Mary kept those things hidden in her heart. The Holy Spirit shows that aspect of Jesus’s family life through the family life of Joseph, “So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?” And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.” Genesis 37:10-11

“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
