“A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, on Shigionoth.  O Lord, I have heard Your speech and was afraid; O Lord, revive Your work in the midst of the years! In the midst of the years make it known; In wrath remember mercy. God came from Teman, The Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of His praise. His brightness was like the light; He had rays flashing from His hand, and there His power was hidden. Before Him went pestilence, and fever followed at His feet. He stood and measured the earth; He looked and startled the nations. And the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills bowed. His ways are everlasting. I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction; The curtains of the land of Midian trembled.” Habakkuk 3:1-7

“Shigionoth” was a word used in music/poetry during the days of Habakkuk. It means to interpret the sentence before it to reflect spiritual turmoil and a call for intervention. In that light, Habakkuk wants his prayer of these verses to reflect his deep spiritual turmoil and ardent desire for God’s intervention. “Selah” is another word used in music/poetry to signify the close of a stanza.

The spirit of Habakkuk is in turmoil because of the lawlessness and chaos he saw in the world through his vision. He wants the judgment of God to be revived on this earth the same as the work God has done throughout the years, “O Lord, revive Your work in the midst of the years! In the midst of the years make it known…”. The tumultuous world that Habakkuk saw is described in Habakkuk chapter one and Habakkuk chapter two.

When Habakkuk hears the word of God, the fear of God is with Him, “O Lord, I have heard Your speech and was afraid…” We need more of that in this world, to fear the word of the Lord because, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9:10 The Gospel of Christ is written on the hearts of we who believe in Him through the Holy Spirit. A heart mind and soul that loves the Lord, and that loves others as ourselves, is the beginning of peace on earth and goodwill towards others. As we know, the peace of the spirit that Jesus Christ gives to us is not the same as the peace that this world offers.

One thing we know about living for God through Jesus Christ, there is mercy for all whose faith is in Him but wrath for those who shun the Holy Spirit. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 With Habakkuk, we pray to God in the Spirit, “In wrath remember mercy.” The Holy Spirit replies, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Petr 3:9

When it is written, “God came from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran…”, this speaks a lot to us. Teman is a city of one of Jobs friends, as quoted, “Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered [Job} and said…” Job 22:1 Mount Paran is a place where the Israelites camped while wandering in the wilderness, as quoted, “Now this is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death. And he said: “The Lord came from Sinai and dawned on them from Seir; He shone forth from Mount Paran, and He came with ten thousands of saints; From His right hand came a fiery law for them. Yes, He loves the people; All His saints are in Your hand; They sit down at Your feet; Everyone receives Your words.” Deuteronomy 33:1-3

Mount Paran is the place where the Israelites camped after being given the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai and just before crossing into Canaan, the promised land. As followers of Jesus Christ, that is where we are; in the wilderness of this this Godless world, while we have the law of Christ through His Gospel, which is just before we enter into the promised land of the eternal New Jerusalem, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.”Romans 8:2 Also, in this world, we go through experiences like Job did, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which will be revealed in us.” Romans 8:18

Like Habakkuk, as we live for Jesus Christ and carry our cross, we feel spiritual turmoil in the atheism of this world. Even so, our hope is the same as Habakkuk’s, hope in the judgment of God and the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. God shone forth from Mount Paran, and He will return with ten thousands of saints; From His right hand came a fiery law for [us]. “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” Jude 1:14-15

Habakkuk recalls when the glory of God covered the heavens, today the skies are covered with global warming as described in Revelation 16:8-9 and space satellites as described in Ezekiel 1. He speaks of when the earth was full of praise for the Living God, today the earth is filled with atheism within the global culture of today’s global government. Today, the earth is filled with those who serve the entity that gives people what to think, feel, say, and do.

Habakkuk recalls the day when the earth was filled with the brightness of God’s light, today the earth is filled with the false light of Satan and his people, “For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.” 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 Today, people serve the entity of false light that gives them uncanny knowledge, heightened intuition, what to think, etc.

Habakkuk recalls the hidden power of God flashing from His hand, from where came His judgment against the spiritual wickedness of this world. He recalls how God’s judgment went forth like pestilence, fever, and pandemics. What Habakkuk recalls is here today, and more is coming. The nations of today will be startled, as mountains are devasted and the hills will bow. All of this is described in Revelation 16. The ways of the Lord are everlasting, the same as today as they were yesterday and will be in the future. This world will be in affliction and the nations will tremble.

“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25
, 3:1
