“Hear now what the Lord says: “Arise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Hear, O you mountains, the Lord’s complaint, and you strong foundations of the earth; For the Lord has a complaint against His people, and He will contend with Israel.” Micah 6:1-2
This verse is describing what we would see in a courtroom: God pronounced His judgement against Israel, Israel appeals the judgment, then God pleads His case against Israel’s appeal. The Lord is saying to the Jewish people, particularly to the Israelis of the State of Israel, to go ahead and plead their case against Him. [The judgment of God was announced against them as described in Micah 5b-15]. However, the Lord has His own complaint which He reiterates in the verses of this post and makes it clear that He will uphold His judgment against Israel.
The rulers of the State of Israel are pleading their case to the mountains and hills of the world’s nations, the United Nations, and anyone else who will hear their case. Their case is that they are suffering unfairly by the violence and conflict coming from the countries all around them. However, the Lord is pleading His case against Israel for all the world to hear and see, and He vows to continue to contend with Israel. In essence, He wants the world to know that He gathered the Jewish people to the State of Israel in 1948 to unleash His judgment on them, as quoted, “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘Because you have all become dross, I will gather you into Jerusalem. As silver, copper, iron, lead and tin are gathered into a furnace to be melted with a fiery blast, so will I gather you in my anger and my wrath and put you inside the city and melt you. I will gather you and I will blow on you with my fiery wrath, and you will be melted inside her.” Ezekiel 22:19-21
“O My people, what have I done to you? And how have I wearied you? Testify against Me. For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, I redeemed you from the house of bondage; And I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.” Micah 6:3-4
Through Micah, the Lord is asking the Jewish people what evil He has done to them, He wants an answer from them. The Lord brought them out of their bondage to the Egyptians [as described in Exodus chapters 1-13] and then gave them leaders to lead them through the wilderness of this world. Moses, Aaron [Moses’ older brother], and Miriam [the sister of Moses] were those leaders. Through Moses, the Ten Commandments were given and through Aaron and Miriam they were to be upheld. The Ten Commandments made the Jewish people much more civilized and much different than the people and nations around them. Click here for the Ten Commandments from Exodus 20:1-17, which enabled them to survive into the “modern” era.
“O My people, remember now what Balak king of Moab counseled, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him, from Acacia Grove to Gilgal, that you may know the righteousness of the Lord.” Micah 6:5
From the stretch between Acacia Grove to Gilgal, Balaam refused to follow the counsel of Balak. The Lord wants the Jewish people to remember the answer that Balaam gave to Balak. The account of this interaction between Balak and Balaam is found in Numbers 22:1-20. Briefly said, Balak wanted Balaam to curse the Jewish people. But Balaam said that even if Balak were to give him his house filled with silver and gold he would not go against the word of the Lord by cursing the Jewish people. For the Jewish people to remember the answer of Balaam would be for them to remember that the righteousness of God goes beyond the prosperity and comfort of this world.
Today, it is more than obvious that the Israelis of the State of Israel are grossly engaged in the ways of this world, as described in Micah 2:8-11. This comes from ignoring the word of the Lord by rejecting Jesus as the Christ and Son of God. If the Jewish people would have accepted Jesus as their Savior 2000 years ago, the State of Israel would not exist today, and neither would the Jewish culture. That’s because as Christians we do not have a nation on this earth to call our own, our country is the New Jerusalem in the new heaven and earth. As quoted, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Galatians 3:28-29
“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
“I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25, 3:11
