Ruth is in the genealogy of Jesus, prophetically praised for being part of His birth lineage.

“So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife; and when he went in to her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son.” Ruth 4:13

Boaz and Ruth are both in the genealogy of our Lord Jesus Christ [as we will see in the coming paragraphs] and both have what could be considered an “unsavory” past. Boaz was given birth by Rahab, the harlot [the story of Rahab is in Joshua 2] but his father was the Jewish man, Salmon. Ruth was a gentile from the land of Moab, but she married the Jewish man, Boaz.

For Boaz and Ruth to be in the genealogy of Jesus is important because they symbolize the purpose of Jesus bringing the born-again experience, without condemnation, to redeem whoever believes in Him, “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” John 3:17 This is how the promise God made to Abraham is fulfilled [the promise to multiply his descendants by great numbers], “And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Galatians 3:29

By the Jewish man, Boaz, Ruth [from the land of Moab] gave birth to a son named Obed. This was a time of celebration for Naomi [mother-in law of Ruth] as well. The Jewish people celebrated that a “grandson” was born to her, as quoted, “Also the neighbor women gave him a name, saying, “There is a son born to Naomi.” And they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.” Ruth 4:17 Our Lord Jesus is of the lineage of king David [both of the Tribe of Judah], and Boaz and Ruth are the great grandparents of king David.

The verses below, from Ruth 4:18-21, outlines the genealogy, whereas Perez is the son of Tamar, who disguised herself as a prostitute to have Judah’s children, and to keep the lineage of the Tribe of Judah alive [the lineage of our Lord Jesus]. This is described in Genesis 38. “Now this is the genealogy of Perez: Perez begot Hezron; Hezron begot Ram, and Ram begot Amminadab; Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon; Salmon begot Boaz, and Boaz begot Obed; Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David.” Ruth 4:18-21

In Jewish culture, it was common not to include women’s names in genealogies, as the focus was placed on the importance of the man’s lineage. That is why the genealogy mentioned by Luke in Luke 3:23-38 only mentions men, but Matthew mentions women in his genealogy in Matthew 1:1-17, such as Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and the virgin Mary. “…Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David the king.” Matthew 1:5-6 Because Jesus was born a virgin birth from the womb of Mary, of the seed of the Spirit of God, He is not of the lineage of man. We are born into His family by the Spirit, not by the seed of the flesh. “For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.” Romans 2:28-29

“Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a redeemer; and may his name be famous in Israel!” Ruth 4:14

Click here for a post from Ruth 4:1-6 explaining the redemption of Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi.

Naomi was the mother-in-law of Ruth and they were both redeemed by Boaz. The women celebrated and sang praises to the Lord because Boaz redeemed Naomi in her old age with Ruth. Boaz welcomed Ruth, a woman from Moab, where the false god Chemosh was worshipped, into the family of the living God among the Jewish people. Boaz also welcomed the elder Naomi. Boaz was their redeemer. Likewise, we celebrate and sing praises to the Lord when someone is welcomed by the Redeemer, Jesus Christ, and brought into the family of God.

“And may he be to you a restorer of life and a sustainer of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne him.” Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her bosom, and became a nurse to him.” Ruth 4:15-16

Boaz was a restorer of life to Naomi in her old age. That’s because without his redemption of his wife Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi, Naomi would be a woman without a country, homeless, penniless, and scrutinized by the culture around her. Our Lord Jesus restores life to us from within the heart and soul, “He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” Psalms 23:3 Also, on the day of our resurrection, we enter into the riches of the New Jerusalem in the new heaven and earth, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

For Boaz to be a sustainer of Naomi’s old age means that he would always be there for her, to comfort and care for her even when she was old. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the one who sustains and comforts us through the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is the guarantee of our inheritance of eternal life, “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you the Comforter [Holy Spirit], that He may abide with you forever— ” John 14:16In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance…”Ephesians 1:13

“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
