“So she went down to the threshing floor and did according to all that her mother-in-law instructed her. And after Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was cheerful, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain; and she came softly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.” Ruth 3:6-7
The previous verses in the post on Ruth 3:1-5 explains what the above verses are speaking about.
“Now it happened at midnight that the man was startled, and turned himself; and there, a woman was lying at his feet. And he said, “Who are you?” So she answered, “I am Ruth, your maidservant. Take your maidservant under your wing, for you are a close relative.” Ruth 3:8-9
Boaz was startled that a woman was lying at his feet and asked, “Who are you?” This is similar to when Jesus Christ was startled and asked, “Who touched me?” when a woman touched the feet of His garment, or the hem of His garment [this is described in Mark 5:25-34]. Ruth wanted to be taken under the wing of Boaz, the same as the woman who touched Jesus wanted to be made whole by Him. A “close relative” translates into “redeemer” since Boaz was the one who would be able to redeem Ruth, to bring her into the family of the Jewish people.
When any person comes to Jesus Christ, we want to be close to Him, to touch Him, hoping to be cleansed of the corruption of this world through His mercy and grace. When we do come to Him, He will ask, “Who are you?” “Who touched me?” Our answer must be that we want to be brought under His wing, to be part of the family of God and to be made whole in spirit and soul. We must acknowledge Him as being our redeemer, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.” – Ephesians 1:7
“Then he said, “Blessed are you of the Lord, my daughter! For you have shown more kindness at the end than at the beginning, in that you did not go after young men, whether poor or rich. And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you request, for all the people of my town know that you are a virtuous woman.” Ruth 3:10-11
Boaz called Ruth, a Moabitess, his daughter, “Blessed are you of the Lord, my daughter!” Jesus also called the woman who touched the hem of His garment His daughter, “And he said unto her, Daughter, your faith has made you whole; go in peace, and be whole of your affliction.” Mark 5:34 Our Lord Jesus calls us His children, even though we are sinners saved only by His mercy and grace, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” 1 John 3:1
Boaz praised Ruth for her steadfast kindness, and said her kindness was even more than the kindness she showed at the beginning. The kindness Ruth showed at the beginning [Ruth 2:10-12] was when she cared for Naomi, her mother-in-law, after Naomi’s husband and two sons died in Moab [as described in Ruth 1:1-5]. One of Naomi’s sons was Ruth’s husband. The latter kindness is that Ruth did not pursue young men, no matter what their social status was, but had eyes only for Boaz.
As followers of Jesus Christ, He praises us for our first kindness in caring for His people, for being kind and accepting of Christians, and desiring to be part of the family of God, “For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.” Hebrews 6:10 Jesus Christ said Himself, “‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’” Matthew 25:40.
Our Lord Jesus also praises our steadfastness to Him in these latter days, as our heart and soul are devoted to Him in this atheistic world. We do not pursue the pleasures of the flesh, or social status, or the prosperity of this world. We choose to walk with Jesus by the Spirit. “….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’” “I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.” Revelation 2:24-25, 3:1
And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you request, for all the people of my town know that you are a virtuous woman.” Ruth 3:10-11
Boaz said to Ruth that all the people of His town know that she is a virtuous woman, the same as God considers everyone in the town of Jesus Christ [in His family] to be righteous. Some of us are very aware of our inherited sin, but we have been justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Boaz [a Jewish man from Bethlehem, Judah] promised Ruth [from the gentile land of Moab],” I will do for you all that you request…” and what Ruth requested was to be redeemed, to be brought under his wing, to be included as a member of the Jewish people, the family of God. God promises to us, through Jesus Christ, “That whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be [redeemed].” Joel 2:32 “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:11-13
