“Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, corrupt affections, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.” Colossians 3:5-7
Covetousness is idolatry because it causes a person to desire something more than desiring God. Covetousness causes a person to set their mind on the things of earth instead of on Jesus Christ and our eternal home in the New Jerusalem.
Paul is teaching the Colossians, and us, that more important than living by the laws of the Old Testament is to put away the destructive desires of human nature. That is done by living for God through Jesus Christ in the presence of the Holy Spirit. The Colossians, and us, are told to put to death [subdue the worst of our carnal nature] as relating to the things on this earth. Such things that are put to death by the Spirit include sexual promiscuity, filthiness within our heart, corrupt affections, evil desires, and covetousness.
Because of allowing the worst of human nature to rule over our decisions, lawlessness comes, and the wrath of God follows. The Holy Spirit restrains lawlessness but is being taken out of the way, as quoted, “For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.” 2 Thessalonians 6:5-8 Click here for a post on the “lawless one”.
Before our born-again experience, we were the children of this world living in disobedience to God who wants us to live in the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ. The wrath of God is coming against the children of disobedience,
“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience…” Ephesians 2:11-2
The prince of the power of this air [that works in the children of disobedience] is something that Ezekiel sheds detailed light on. In Ezekiel 1, he describes the image of the space shuttle, space station, satellite system, and voice from space.
“But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.” Colossians 3:8-11
“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:12-16
“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Colossians 3:17
“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,“
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
“I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25, 3:1
