King Solomon describes the appearance of the Shulamite woman, his bride, “Behold, you are fair, my love! Behold, you are fair! You have dove’s eyes behind your veil. Your hair is like a flock of goats, going down from Mount Gilead. Your teeth are like a flock of shorn sheep which have come up from the washing, every one of which bears twins, and none is barren among them. Your lips are like a strand of scarlet, and your mouth is lovely. Your temples behind your veil are like a piece of pomegranate. Your neck is like the tower of David, built for an armory, on which hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men. Your two breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle, which feed among the lilies.” Song of Solomon 4:1-5

The pictures below give an image of what the black Shulamite woman may have looked like, Solomon’s bride. The picture to the left shows the perfect white teeth [appearance of being washed] as the teeth on the right side are the twin of the teeth on the left, with no barrenness/gaps whatsoever. In that same picture we see the eyes like a dove and the lips like a strand of scarlet, a lovely mouth The picture in the middle shows the hair like “goats” flowing down, although her hair was probably more like braids than a bush, but the general idea is that this was a black woman’s afro flowing downward over the head. Comparing her breasts like two fawns is an imagery of innocence, gentleness, and comfort. The Shulamite’s neck would have looked similar to the picture to the far right, but more elegant and appealing to the eyes. Her temples were also decorated with ornaments, like a “piece of pomegranate”.

The description that Solomon gives of his bride, the black Shulamite woman is how God sees us as he forgives our sin in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ. We are black because we are sinners saved only by the grace and mercy of God, but we are beautiful in His eyes. As quoted in verse 7, “You are all fair, my love, and there is no spot in you.” “Oh precious is the flow, that makes me white as snow no other fount I know nothing but the blood of Jesus” [Church song].

Solomon continues to address his bride, the Shulamite, “Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away, I will go my way to the mountain of myrrh and to the hill of frankincense. You are all fair, my love, and there is no spot in you. Come with me from Lebanon, my spouse, with me from Lebanon. look from the top of Amana, from the top of Senir and Hermon, from the lions’ dens, from the mountains of the leopards.Song of Solomon 4:6-8

Solomon said until the morning comes, and the shadows flee away he would go to the mountain of myrrh and frankincense, which would be a very pleasant place of a sweet aroma. That is where our Lord Jesus Christ is, in Heaven, until He returns as the Bright and Morning Star. Meanwhile, He calls all of us who live for God by faith in Him His love and spotless. He calls for all of us to come to live with Him eternally in the New Jerusalem, to come to His marriage supper, “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’ ” Revelation 19:7-9 Jesus brings us to a place with a view from the top.

King Solomon speaks of the heartfelt love he has for the Shulamite, which goes beyond her beautiful physical appearance, “You have ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; You have ravished my heart with one look of your eyes, with one link of your necklace. How fair is your love, my sister, my spouse! How much better than wine is your love, and the fragrance of your perfumes than all spices! Your lips, O my spouse, drip as the honeycomb; Honey and milk are under your tongue; And the fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon.” Song of Solomon 4:9-11

The heart of Jesus Christ is impressed as He looks into the window of our eyes and sees the dove of the Holy Spirit living there. He calls us His friend and bride. Our love for Him is much better than any euphoria this world could offer, and He loves us for that. The fragrance that goes up from us is the Spirit of Christ, “For we are to God the fragrance of Christ.” 2 Corinthians 2:15 Our lips drip like the honeycomb is to drip with the Holy Spirit in what comes from our mouth. In Christ Jesus, honey and milk are under our tongue. We are clothed with the Holy Spirit and that clothing is a sweet fragrance to our Lord. The neck is what turns our head, and the links of our neck keeps our head turned in the direction of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Solomon goes on to express his love for the Shulamite, “A garden enclosed Is my sister, my spouse, a spring shut up, a fountain sealed. Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates with pleasant fruits, fragrant henna with spikenard, Spikenard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense, myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices—a fountain of gardens, A well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon.” Song of Solomon 4:12-15

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are His garden where the seed of the Holy Spirit is planted to grow in us, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” Matthew 13:31-32 His garden is enclosed within our heart, soul, and mind. There is also a fountain of water enclosed within us, because Jesus lives within us, “...the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:14 The plants that come from the enclosure of our soul blossoms with the fruit of the Spirit, pleasant fruit with a sweet aroma.

The Shulamite woman, Solomon’s bride, speaks to express her desire to always please Solomon, for her “enclosed garden” to always produce for her beloved, “Awake, O north wind, and come, O south! Blow upon my garden, that its spices may flow out. Let my beloved come to his garden and eat its pleasant fruits.” Song of Solomon 4:16

As followers of Jesus Christ, we always want our “enclosed garden” to produce the pleasant fruits of the Holy Spirit. We want our Lord Jesus to be pleased today and when He comes again.

King Solomon praises the Shulamite [his bride] for her beautiful and fruitful garden, a place where he was able to harvest myrrh, spices, honeycomb, honey, grapes for wine, and milk. “I have come to my garden, my sister, my spouse; I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk.” Song of Solomon 5:1a.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we want Him to be able to enjoy the growth and blossoms of the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our life. The myrrh and spice are the sweet fragrance of the Holy Spirit within our spirit, “For we are to God the fragrance of Christ…” 2 Corinthians 2:15. The honeycomb and honey are the sweetness of the Holy Spirit woven into our soul, “Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet heavenly Dove, stay right here with us, filling us with Your love.” [Church Song] The wine is the New Covenant through the blood of Jesus Christ where we serve Him in the Spirit not by the written law, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.” Luke 22:20 The milk is His word, His Spirit, on which we nourish ourselves and grow in Him.

King Solomon spoke to his friends these words as he invites them to enjoy the harvest of the garden, “Eat, O friends! Drink, yes, drink deeply, O beloved ones!” Song of Solomon 5:1b.

Our Lord Jesus speaks these words to us, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” Matthew 9:37-38 Jesus spoke these words “But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.” Matthew 9:36-37 Jesus wants everyone to indulge in the fruit of the Spirit. “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’: Revelation 19:7-9

“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25
, 3:1
