“What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one.” Galatians 3:19-20
The purpose of the law can be described like a parent raising a child, a parent who guides and molds the child into living a civil life. Parents show the child their wrongdoing to correct them to do what is right. When the child reaches adulthood, the hope is that the child will continue in wholesome living, but if not the weight of society’s law will fall on the child, in a court of law or other ways. The laws of Judaism, such as the Ten Commandments, were the parent raising the child, until the coming of Jesus Christ who said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40 Our Lord Jesus summarized the massive number of laws into those two, making it possible for anyone to live with God’s blessing.
God has made it possible to be right with Him without the mandates of laws [such as circumcision, animal sacrifices, observing specific days, etc.] because now we serve Him directly from the mind, heart, and soul, “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23-24
“Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law.” Galatians 3:21
We know the law is like a parent guiding a child away from bad behavior into good, so does that make the Gospel of Jesus Christ against the will of God? Of course not! The guidance of parents cannot give life to the spirit and heart of their children to do well, although that is the hope that the child would have a heartfelt union with their parent’s mentorship. If there is a single rule of parenting that could give life within the heart and spirit of a child, to keep them on the right path of life, then being right with God would come by that one parenting rule. However, a child must want to live a civil life beyond their life of being under their parent’s control. Likewise, if there was just one law that brought us the born-again experience, then we would live by that one law. That is why our Lord Jesus boiled all the multitudes of laws down to two that He gives us to live by, [Matthew 22:37-40]
“But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.” Galatians 3:22
The Holy Scriptures clearly says that everybody has inherited sin within their human nature, there is nothing we can do to change that, we are confined to that state, “…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” Romans 3:23 That is why faith in Jesus Christ, and the mercy and faith of God is so important, just our belief in Him brings forgiveness to us as sinners, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 No one is perfect in this life, nor can be, but we are justified through Jesus Christ, “So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.” 1 Corinthians 15:42-44
But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed.” Galatians 3:23
Before the laws were replaced by the mercy and grace of Jesus Christ, they kept the Jewish people under guard, on their best behavior. No other culture, country, or nation had the laws such as the Ten Commandments, and the many other laws. The Jewish people were known to be peculiar, strange, and odd because they had rules against sexual promiscuity, human sacrifices, worshipping animals, etc. When Jesus Christ came, all of the laws were replaced/kept from within the heart by the Spirit, and boiled down to just two commandments, to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and to love others as ourselves [Matthew 22:37-40]
Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.” Galatians 3:24-25
Today, when we read the Old Testament, especially the first five books [known as the Torah], we are not reading to memorize all of the 613 laws to live by, we are reading to learn more about God, Jesus Christ, and how the Holy Spirit works within our life. We are looking for the “scarlet cord” that points to Jesus Christ as the promise given to us in the New Testament, after faith has come, we are no longer under the tutor of the law.
“Before Christ came, Moses’ laws served as our guardian. Christ came so that we could receive God’s approval by faith. But now that this faith has come, we are no longer under the control of a guardian.” Galatians 3:24-25
Don’t just do good while others are watching, do good even when no one sees it. Beng under the law is like doing good because we are being watched, but living under Christ by being born-again of the heart and Spirit is to do good because that is who we want to be inwardly, not because others are watching. We want to put on the Spirit of Christ 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
“For this One [Jesus] has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God. And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.” Hebrews 3:1-6
“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,“
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
“I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25, 3:11
