  • To the elect lady and her children.
  • Elect lady is exhorted to love one another.

To the elect lady and her children. “The Elder, to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all those who have known the truth, because of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever: Grace, mercy, and peace will be with you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.” 2 John verses 1-3

“The Elder” refers to the Apostle John, who writes to the “elect lady and her children.” Who is the elect lady and her children? Where two or more gather in the name of Jesus Christ, a Church fellowship is formed, so John is definitely writing to a Church. Even if this is a mother and her children, this is still a Chruch congregation. John loves the elect lady and her children in the truth of Jesus Christ. Not only does John love this Church congregation, but everyone who lives for God through Jesus Christ loves the Christian family.

As part of the Church family, we share love because the truth of Jesus Christ lives within us and will be with us eternally. Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us as members of God’s family through Jesus Christ, living in the presence of the Holy Spirit with truth and love.

Elect lady is exhorted to love one another. “I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father. And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another. This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.” 2 John verses 4-6

I was raised in a family with four brothers and two sisters, and both of my parents were present at home. Not all of us followed the path of Jesus Christ, and my mother had been a member of the Church years before my father joined. She was faithful in bringing us children to Church, yet only a few of us decided to continue in the truth of Christ into adulthood. We can see why the Apostle John said to the elect lady, “I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth…”

The Apostle John pleaded with the elect lady to continue in loving one another according to the word of God. This same plea likely resides in the hearts of family members who yearn for unity in love among their brothers, sisters, and parents, rather than being divided by strife, discord, and indifference. We are called to love each other and, most importantly, to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind. This is the path we should follow towards the family of God who walk in Jesus Christ.

“Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40

“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,“
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
“I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25, 3:11
