“It came to pass in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth day of the month, that certain of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, and sat before me.” Ezekiel 20:1
The date given measures a certain stretch of time within the captivity of the Israelites to the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar. The elders that came to inquire of the Lord were very far removed from the will of God. This would be like the Jewish people of today inquiring of God through the Old Testament but discarding the entire New Testament, which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is like people trying to come into the presence of God while oppressing the Holy Spirit, discarding the need for the remission of sin through Jesus, and while denying God.
Jesus Christ is the only way to God, the only truth, and the only life, “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6 If God is to be inquired of then it will be through Jesus.
“Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel, and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Have you come to inquire of Me? As I live,” says the Lord God, “I will not be inquired of by you.”’ Ezekiel 20:2-3
Why would someone inquire of the Lord who turns a deaf ear to the answers He gives? That is exactly what the Jewish people do when they make their prayers to God but close their ears to His Son Jesus Christ. This is the answer God gives to the whole world, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 When anyone rejects that message, then the response from God is, “Have you come to inquire of Me? As I live,” says the Lord God, “I will not be inquired of by you.”
All of our inquiries of God go through Jesus Christ who makes intercession for us, “It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” Romans 8:34 “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” Hebrews 7:25 If we do not acknowledge Jesus Christ (the Son) as the mediator between us and God (the Father), then His response to us is, “Have you come to inquire of Me? As I live,” says the Lord God, “I will not be inquired of by you.”
“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,“
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
“I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25, 3:11
