“And Mordecai told them to answer Esther: “Do not think in your heart that you will escape in the king’s palace any more than all the other Jews.” Esther 4:13
Queen Esther had a secret that she kept from her husband and king: she was Jewish. Mordecai warned her that she would not be spared when the decree to annihilate the Jewish people was carried out. What is in the heart makes us who we are and shapes our spirit. Esther could not avoid the anger of those who hated what she had hiding in her heart. Likewise, no Jewish person was safe from the terror that Hitler’s Germany inflicted on them.
Since we are followers of Jesus Christ, He lives in our hearts, “…it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me…” Galatians 2:20 By offering our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit, we become the children of God.“…but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit…” Romans 2:29 We cannot fool those who demand that we surrender our inner selves to the authority that gives people their thoughts, words, actions and emotions. “And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God.” 2 Corinthians 6:16
“For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14
Mordecai told Esther that the Jewish people would be saved eventually even if she hid her identity from her husband and king. However, she would be among the dead of the Jewish people, along with her relatives, including Mordecai. But, if she confessed to the king that she was Jewish, he might spare her and all the Jewish people from destruction. Mordecai reasoned that God might have made her queen for this purpose. Mordecai’s warning to Esther came from his care and affection for her as much as from his worry for the fate of all the Jewish people. Esther loved Mordecai as well and would not want to spare her own life at the expense at his.
As followers of Jesus Christ, even if we remain completely silent in these anti-Christian times, Jesus Christ is returning to bring deliverance to the faithful few who hold to their identity as Christians. We love Jesus Christ, who loves us and does not wish us to perish. We also do not want to witness His perishing from this world. Meanwhile, the Gospel of Christ is perishing along with those who follow Him in Spirit and truth. In these perilous times, which grow more dangerous as time goes by, we who follow Jesus may be the ones who can make a difference. We can encourage other Christians and bring Salvation to the lost by acknowledging who we are in Jesus Christ.
“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’
“I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25, 3:11
