  • A plan to choose a new queen is hatched.
  • Esther was an orphan raised by her cousin Mordechai.
  • Esther is chosen to participate in the king’s beauty pageant.
  • Esther has one year of beauty preparation and an overnight stay with the king.
  • Esther is chosen as queen to replace the banished Vashti.
  • Esther’s cousin Mordecai saves the king from an assassination plot.

A plan to choose a new queen is hatched. “After these things, when the wrath of King Ahasuerus subsided, he remembered Vashti, what she had done, and what had been decreed against her.” Esther 2:1

After the rage of King Ahasuerus subsided, he turned his focus on finding a new queen after he banished Vashti, his former wife and queen, from his presence and ruined her life. Esther chapter 1 describes the rage of the king and the banishment of his wife.

King Ahasuerus had a narcissistic and grandiose personality, which made him feel relieved when he got rid of someone who opposed him. He did not feel any remorse or empathy for the life he destroyed. He was furious when his wife humiliated him in public, so he banished her and then moved on with his life as if nothing had happened. He started looking for a new woman to replace Vashti.

Throwing somebody “under the bus” is not what God wants of us, He wants mercy and compassion, “For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.” Hosea 6:6 Jesus Christ came to give us God’s mercy and compassion, “For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” Luke 9:56 As followers of Jesus Christ, we are the light of His mercy, grace, Salvation and eternal life. “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” John 3:17 A gentle and humble heart helps us find rest and peace in our Lord Jesus Christ, instead of finding relief in the destruction of others, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:29

“Then the king’s servants who attended him said: “Let beautiful young virgins be sought for the king; and let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather all the beautiful young virgins to Shushan the citadel, into the women’s quarters, under the custody of Hegai the king’s eunuch, custodian of the women. And let beauty preparations be given them. Then let the young woman who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti.” Esther 2:2-4

The plan to find the king a new queen involved rounding up all the young and beautiful girls from every state in the country and making them compete in a show of beauty for his eyes only. They were corralled like cattle and dressed up as if they were toy dolls. The king would cho0se the new queen like someone shopping in a store for the most appealing merchandise. He would select the doll he liked best to replace the one he had discarded. It was essentially a private Miss Universe contest for the narcissistic and grandiose king. He wanted an ornament to adorn himself, not a human being with a soul and spirit created by God.

The Holy Spirit teaches us not to appeal to the carnal desires of the beast because we do not want to draw people to desire the beauty of the flesh but to desire the beauty of the Spirit of Christ. “Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. 1 Peter 3:3-4

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another…” “For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Galatians 5:16-17 and 1 Samuel 16:7

Esther was an orphan raised by her cousin Mordechai. “In Shushan the citadel there was a certain Jew whose name was Mordecai the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite.” Esther 2:5

Mordecai was Jewish, which later proved to be crucial when under the rule of King Ahasuerus, a narcissistic and grandiose ruler, a plan arose to persecute and annihilate the Jews. Esther was the cousin of Mordecai and Jewish through-and-through. She was chosen to be the queen and wife of King Ahasuerus, who was unaware of her heritage. A fascinating fact is that the Apostle Paul descended from Mordecai, a member of the tribe of Benjamin or the Benjamites, as quoted, “…circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee…” Philippians 3:5

As followers of Jesus Christ, we belong to the family tree of God’s children. We are, in a way, from the tribe of Judah, since our Lord Jesus came from that tribe. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” John 1:12-13 That proves to be crucial for us Christians of today and even more so as the days progress under the global government of the beast, “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” John 15:18-19

“Kish had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captives who had been captured with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.” Esther 2:6

Mordecai was from the lineage of those who were captured and enslaved by Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon. This would be similar to a Jewish person being a direct relative of someone who lived in Germany and suffered in the holocaust under the rule of Hitler. As Mordecai’s cousin, Esther had that heritage deeply rooted within her.

Today’s Babylon is the global government that governs through the entity giving people their emotions, thoughts, words, and actions. This entity holds the people of the global culture captive by animating the image of the beast to live and speak through them. By living through the global culture, the Gospel of Christ is held captive to prevent it from spreading. This means that Christianity and the name of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are kept in captivity.

“And Mordecai had brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter, for she had neither father nor mother. The young girl was lovely and beautiful. When her father and mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter.” Esther 2:7

Esther was an orphan, and her cousin Mordecai took care of her as his own daughter after the loss of both her parents. She was beautiful and lovely. Esther was a Jewish girl who lived in Persia. Her name was changed from the Persian Hadassah, which means “star” or “myrtle”, to Esther before she married king Ahasuerus and became the queen.

In the book of Esther, we can see the contrasts of the attitude of Mordecai, who feared God, and King Ahasuerus, who was narcissistic and grandiose, towards other people. Mordecai showed compassion and Godly love to an orphan girl, while the king was indifferent to others and willing to destroy life. Mordecai recognized a human soul and spirit created by God, but the king only saw an ornament of a fleshly body to satisfy his narcissistic and carnal desires.

Unlike the rest of the world in those days, who were called Godless Gentiles, Mordecai and all the Jewish people followed the guidance of the Ten Commandments. Jesus Christ’s coming granted everyone the opportunity to become God’s children. Now, the whosoever receives this promise from the Holy Spirit, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.” Ezekiel 36:26-27 We must be born again by the remission of sin through Jesus Christ, “Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ ” John 3:5-7

Esther is chosen to participate in the king’s beauty pageant. “So it was, when the king’s command and decree were heard, and when many young women were gathered at Shushan the citadel, under the custody of Hegai, that Esther also was taken to the king’s palace, into the care of Hegai the custodian of the women.” Esther 2:8

The king was a narcissist and full of grandiosity who demanded that every state in the country send him their young and beautiful girls. They were treated like dolls, placed into a commercial shipping truck and stored in a warehouse under the king’s property managers. Esther, a Godly Jewish girl, was one of the many girls who were taken to the king’s palace as a candidate to be his next queen. This was a Miss Universe pageant designed as a shopping list for the king.

When it comes to children of any age our Lord Jesus Christ says this, “But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” And He laid His hands on them and departed from there.” Matthew 19:14-15 Today’s world prevents children from approaching Jesus Christ, as they are influenced by an entity that shapes their feelings, actions, thoughts, and words. This entity allows the image of the beast to live and speak through them against God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Children of all ages are molded by the global culture’s will as they are groomed to the mark of the beast in their speech and deeds.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we welcome the Holy Spirit to tame the carnal beast of our human nature and reject any exploitation of young people’s innocence and vulnerability for our own benefit, pleasure, or image. Our Lord Jesus wants young people to learn to honor God, our Creator, to recognize our need for Jesus Christ to forgive our sins, and to embrace the goodness and purity of life through the Holy Spirit.

“Now the young woman pleased him, and she obtained his favor; so he readily gave beauty preparations to her, besides her allowance. Then seven choice maidservants were provided for her from the king’s palace, and he moved her and her maidservants to the best place in the house of the women. Esther had not revealed her people or family, for Mordecai had charged her not to reveal it.” Esther 2:9-10

Esther was the young woman chosen as the ideal doll for the narcissistic and grandiose king to display as his accessory. She received beauty treatments that tailored her appearance to the king’s preferences. She also got money and a group of women from the royal palace to attend to her every need. She was moved to the finest quarters in the women’s house. Narcissistic and grandiose people lack emotional attachment and genuine love for others. They only express their affection through worldly things, such as physical enhancements, material gifts, pampering services, and preferential treatment.

Jesus Christ warns us to resist the temptations and promises of this world, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” Mark 8:36 A common practice in the Bible is to use “man” as a synonym for humankind.

Esther was a Jew, but she kept this a secret from the king and his people. She had been brought up to respect God and to follow the Ten Commandments. Her whole life embraced the Spirit of the teachings of Jesus, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40 Esther had a Godly attitude that showed respect, humility, and obedience to others and she was chosen as a possible queen for the king, who was narcissistic and grandiose. Esther was submissive, compliant, or adaptable enough to suit the king’s purposes. Her beauty also made her a desirable trophy for him to show off.

“And every day Mordecai paced in front of the court of the women’s quarters, to learn of Esther’s welfare and what was happening to her.” Esther 2:11

Esther faced a perilous situation that worried Mordecai like a parent who fears for their child’s life in a war zone or a surgery room in a hospital. She had grown up with the Ten Commandments as her moral guide, but she was surrounded by a culture that was not aware of them and followed their own values. Mordecai had to wonder: Would she survive? Would she fit in with the foreign people? Would she become the queen of a dangerous, narcissistic and grandiose king?

Jesus Christ has this prayer for us, “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” John 17:15-17

Esther has one year of beauty preparation and an overnight stay with the king. “Each young woman’s turn came to go in to King Ahasuerus after she had completed twelve months’ preparation, according to the regulations for the women, for thus were the days of their preparation apportioned: six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with perfumes and preparations for beautifying women.” Esther 2:12

The king’s beauty standards were very strict, and only the finalists who passed the quality control could advance to the next stage. There, they had to undergo a year of intensive beauty treatments, which included six months of oil of myrrh and six months of perfumes. These treatments would have stripped away the natural spiritual beauty of the women and made them more like lifeless dolls than human beings. Narcissistic and grandiose people view others as objects, not as human beings made by God with a spirit and soul.

Jesus Christ invites us to experience life in the human spirit by welcoming the Holy Spirit into our hearts. The Spirit matters more than outward appearances, which we should not value too highly. “Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.” 1 Peter 3:3-4 Esther’s outward beauty was altered to fit worldly standards, but her inner spirit stayed faithful to God. We need to be born of the human spirit and God’s Spirit, “Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” John 3:5 ”For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

The picture below illustrates the transformation of queens’ appearance in those days from natural and spiritual beauty to something artificial. The picture may not be 100% accurate, but it reminds us of the unnatural looks of the Egyptian queens, Persian queens, etc.

“Thus prepared, each young woman went to the king, and she was given whatever she desired to take with her from the women’s quarters to the king’s palace.” Esther 2:13

The women underwent a “beauty” transformation for a year, following the king’s preferences for his future queen. After that, they were to meet the king and see if he would choose them as his queen. They could bring something with them, confined to whatever is already in the women’s chamber, to impress the king.

God does not desire the material offerings we give Him, but He desires us to dedicate ourselves to Him with a spirit and soul that is alive with His Spirit, “I beseech[you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:1-2

“In the evening she went, and in the morning she returned to the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s eunuch who kept the concubines. She would not go in to the king again unless the king delighted in her and called for her by name.” Esther 2:14

If the king was pleased by the physical appearance of one of the women, he would call her by name to spend personal time with him. There would have been numerous women whose name he called to spend the night with. By this time, He had already shown himself to be narcissistic, self-absorbed, in need of admiration, and utterly lacking in empathy. He had destroyed his previous wife’s life for saying “No” to him. Anything could have taken place with the girls during that night. He would have intimidated them with his majestic looks and behavior, asserting his superiority over them. He had no intention of serving them in any way but expected them to be of service to him.

Our Lord Jesus Christ requires equality in the Holy Spirit, which is incomprehensible to people who are narcissistic and grandiose, “And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:24-28

Esther is chosen as queen to replace the banished Vashti. “Now when the turn came for Esther the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her as his daughter, to go in to the king, she requested nothing but what Hegai the king’s eunuch, the custodian of the women, advised. And Esther obtained favor in the sight of all who saw her.” Esther 2:15

Esther was an orphaned Jewish girl, raised by her cousin Mordecai after the loss of her parents. She followed the Ten Commandments and respected the authority of others. When Esther was selected as one of the finalists on the king’s wish list for his new wife and queen, it was her turn to spend a night with him as part of his decision process. She did not ask for anything special to take with her, but listened to the advice of those who were in charge of her. She was humble and obedient, and she won the favor of everyone who saw her. “It is better to be humble in spirit with the lowly than to divide the spoil with the proud.” Proverbs 16:9

“So Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus, into his royal palace, in the tenth month, which is the month of Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign. The king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she obtained grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins; so he set the royal crown upon her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.” Esther 2:16-17

Esther, having a humble and obedient spirit, and asking nothing for herself, was brought before the narcissistic and grandiose king Ahasuerus. He chose her over all the other girls because she satisfied his need for admiration, loyalty, and empowerment. Her beauty also served as an ornament that he could display to enhance his own image. The king granted Esther more grace and favor than any of the other virgins and crowned her as his new queen, replacing Vashti, whose life he had destroyed for saying “No” to him.

Unlike King Ahasuerus, who grants grace and favor only to those who boost his image and reputation, God extends favor and grace to the flawed and despised of this world who admit their sins and their failure to meet His standards of glory, “For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus…” Romans 3:23-24

“Then the king made a great feast, the Feast of Esther, for all his officials and servants; and he proclaimed a holiday in the provinces and gave gifts according to the generosity of a king.” Esther 2:18

The great feast, named after Esther, is also referred to as the Feast of Purim in Esther 9:18-32 Mordecai and his cousin Queen Esther instituted this as an annual celebration for the Jewish community, and it is still observed today.

The Feast of Purim commemorates the events recorded in the book of Esther, where Esther rescued her people, the Jews, from a massacre. She was God’s person of providence for that specific occasion. However, most Jews do not recognize the “scarlet cord” connecting the deliverance of their ancestors with the salvation that God offered through Jesus Christ. Mordecai also had a crucial role in persuading the king to accept Esther’s plea to spare the Jews. Mordecai prevented the king from being killed by exposing a conspiracy against him. However, most Jews do not accept Jesus Christ as God’s envoy who came to save them from eternal death, which is hell. Mordecai is elevated to the position of the king’s chief adviser, while Esther remains as queen. However, most Jews do not acknowledge the ascension of Jesus Christ, who sits at God’s right hand.

Esther’s cousin Mordecai saves the king from an assassination plot. “When virgins were gathered together a second time, Mordecai sat within the king’s gate.” Esther 2:19

Even after Esther became queen, the self-centered narcissistic king continued to collect virgins and sort them into his harem or discard them. He treated them like livestock, choosing the physically desirable ones and rejecting the rest. This is nothing like separating those who are alive in the Spirit from those who are dead to the goodness of God’s Holiness. Mordecai stayed on the palace grounds, near the king’s gate, while the virgins were taken to the king. The king’s gate was not the entrance to the palace itself, but to the property where the palace stood.

Malacai sat inside the gate’s entrance, but still a good distance away from the palace. The image shows where he was located. He was on the lawn, close to the gate entrance.

Today, the gate to the king’s palace is the entrance into the presence of the entity that gives people what to feel, think, say, and do. This is the place where people either surrender their bodies to the entity that claims to be God within them or reject it and devote their bodies to the Holy Spirit. The king of today is he “…who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” 2 Thessalonians 2:4 Click here for a post on the “man of sin”. Malacai would not be invited into that palace but would be where the gates open to a point of decision. He would be among those who avoid the Christless palace to acknowledge that God made us as the dwelling of the Holy Spirit. “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? ” 1 Corinthians 3:16

“Now Esther had not revealed her family and her people, just as Mordecai had charged her, for Esther obeyed the command of Mordecai as when she was brought up by him.” Esther 2:20

Esther resisted the king’s narcissism and grandiosity by staying loyal to her cousin Mordecai, who had raised her like his own daughter. Their bond was based on their devotion to God and His Ten Commandments. Mordecai advised her not to disclose that she was Jewish through-and-through.

Some people who follow Jesus Christ today do not reveal that they are Christians, even though we live for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and reject the anti-Christian force that influences thoughts, feelings, words, and actions. We devote our lives to God our Creator, we admit that we are sinners who need Jesus Christ, and we welcome the Holy Spirit in our spirit and soul. Whenever we have a chance, we proudly proclaim our faith in God through Jesus Christ.

“In those days, while Mordecai sat within the king’s gate, two of the king’s eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, doorkeepers, became furious and sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.” Esther 2:21

The image depicts two guards who resemble doorkeepers. Mordecai was near enough to overhear their plot to kill the king. He was out of sight on one side of the wall and the two conspirators on the other side.

A possible mastermind behind the plot to kill the king was his scorned former wife, Vashti, but the story concentrates on the two eunuchs who were supposed to carry out the murder.

The eunuchs had many possible motives for plotting to assassinate King Ahasuerus, who was a domineering, cunning, narcissistic and arrogant ruler. Their murderous impulse stemmed from their own fleshly desires of the savage human nature that could not bear the king’s oppressive orders. For instance, they might have resented being eunuchs, which was a condition forced on them by the king’s will. A eunuch is a male who has no sensual relationship with females. They probably felt furious to witness the countless beautiful young virgins brought before the king, each one at his disposal. Their anger grew over time, and they hatched a plan to kill the king. “Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war…” James 4:1-2

Today, the entity giving people what to feel, think, say, and how to behave dictates the lifestyle that people are to live. This entity animates the image of the beast that lives and speaks through people in every city around the world. People conform to their place within the global culture as they are groomed to the mark of the beast by what they say and do. Some people do not like to be forced into an unpleasant position in life or to accept a lower status than what they believe they deserve. This applies to relationships, parenthood, careers, finances, social life, success, achievements and so on. This leads to various forms of violence, rebellion, antisocial behaviors and lawlessness of all kinds.

We are followers of Jesus Christ, and we renounce the carnal and beastly ways of this world. We understand that the battle is a spiritual one, and only Jesus Christ can give us victory by the remission of our sin. “‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.” Zachariah 4:6 God tells us to put on the Armor of God, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:10-12

The Armor of God is mentioned in Ephesians 6:10-20. Our strength comes from the Spirit of the Lord, not from the beastly instincts of human nature. The Armor of God protects us from the schemes of Satan, who exploits our flesh and blood weaknesses. We are called to live in the truth of Christ, not in the lies that the world tells us. We are called to live in righteousness, not in the false belief that power justifies everything. We are called to live in peace, not in hostility and conflict. We are called to live in hope, not in despair and frustration that lead to chaos. We are called to rest in the salvation we have in Jesus Christ, not in the ruin of this world. He came to save, not to destroy. We are called to live by the Spirit, the word of God, to keep ourselves Holy and separate from the worldly worries. We are called to pray in the Holy Spirit, not to curse what annoys us. We have to be vigilant and persistent and support one another in our Lord Jesus Christ. Let’s pray for each other that we will glorify the name of Jesus Christ.

So the matter became known to Mordecai, who told Queen Esther, and Esther informed the king in Mordecai’s name. And when an inquiry was made into the matter, it was confirmed, and both were hanged on a gallows; and it was written in the book of the chronicles in the presence of the king.” Esther 2:22-23

Mordecai learned of the plot to assassinate the very narcissistic and self-absorbed king. Mordecai informed his cousin, Queen Esther, who relayed the information to her husband, King Ahasuerus. The conspirators who planned to kill the king were put to death. We should never use hostility, aggression, violence, or murder against anyone, no matter how narcissistic and grandiose they are. This is especially true when they are the lawmakers and rulers of the people. The Holy Spirit reminds us, “Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men— ” 1 Peter 2:13-15

To a narcissist, someone who saved his life and helped him defeat his enemies would be a valuable asset. However, he would not feel any genuine affection, friendship, or equality towards that person. He would only offer political favors, material rewards, promotions and so on to keep the asset loyal and close to him.

Mordecai and Queen Esther prioritized serving God and the rewards that came with it, rather than the worldly rewards bestowed by the king, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’
I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25
