- Astonishment at Christ’s supper table
Gifts are brought, a supper is prepared, and a ravenous wolf is among the attendees. With money, commodities, and Benjamin, the brothers went down to meet with Joseph. The last-days-meaning of the name of Benjamin (Genesis 49:1-27) is that of being a ravenous wolf that tears apart the prey in the morning. Bringing the gifts mixed with the ravenous wolf is like Judas who betrayed Jesus Christ during the time of the last supper. “So the men took that present and Benjamin, and they took double money in their hand, and arose and went down to Egypt; and they stood before Joseph.” Genesis 43:15
“They took double the money” refers to the previous verses when the “men” (Joseph’s brothers) found the money in their packs that they were supposed to use to buy food from Joseph. Unknown to them, Joseph ordered the money to be put back in their sacks to make the food a gift from Joseph. When the “men” saw the money in their sacks, they were afraid they would be falsely accused of stealing the food. As a result, the next time they visited Jospeh they took double the money to repay everything, as quoted below,
“Then Joseph gave a command to fill their sacks with grain, to restore every man’s money to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. Thus he did for them.” Genesis 42:25 “So (one of the men) said to his brothers, “My money has been restored, and there it is, in my sack!” Then their hearts sank and they were afraid, saying to one another, “What is this that God has done to us?” Genesis 42:28 Jacob said to the “men” “Take double money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was an oversight.” Genesis 43:12.
As soon as Jesus saw the ravenous wolf (Judas) with the gifts, He knew His hour was at hand and it was time to make ready for His death and sacrifice on the Cross. The Holy Spirit represents this through Joseph, who saw Benjamin and ordered the slaughter of a sacrifice in order to eat together, “When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Take these men to my home, and slaughter an animal and make ready; for these men will dine with me at noon.” Genesis 43:16
At the time of the last supper of Jesus Christ, His betrayal was arranged through Judas, and the disciples were brought in for the supper, “Then the man did as Joseph ordered, and the man brought the men into Joseph’s house.” Genesis 43:17
Money, possessions, physical comforts, and the carnal nature are what today’s society uses to betray Jesus Christ; they govern by the thing forming what they think, feel, do, and say wrapped in the clothing of humanism. The image of the beast lives and speaks through people in every city around the world by forming their thoughts and feelings. By what they say and do, they betray the Lord Jesus Christ and depend on worldly rationale. They are conformed to the anti-Christian global culture as they are groomed to the mark of the beast by what they say and do.
An ominous sense that something dark is brewing is felt in the world. The men felt fear on that day of the supper when they were invited to eat with Joseph. They thought the meeting with Joseph was a “set-up” to frame them because of the money, and an ominous feeling overwhelmed them that something dark was brewing. They felt doom upon themselves. “Now the men were afraid because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said, “It is because of the money, which was returned in our sacks the first time, that we are brought in, so that he may make a case against us and seize us, to take us as slaves with our donkeys.” Genesis 43:18
When the last supper with Jesus Christ took place, I’m sure the mood was a dark one with an obvious sense of doom. Jesus knew His crucifixion was just hours away, and Judas was among them who had it in his dark heart to betray Jesus for pieces of silver. The Twelve Apostles were feeling the dark and evil presence enslaving he atmosphere at the last supper. Today, there is a dark and evil doom looming over this world as the Gospel of Jesus Christ is being taken out. We followers of Jesus feel the darkness against us in today’s world, a world which betrays Christianity for the benefits of this world. Also, there is doom looming over those who betray Jesus Christ for money, possessions, and physical comforts as they will face judgment in the life to come. And there is doom looming over the global government of the beast as world tribulation progresses forward.
Communing with Jesus Christ to share from our abundance and to receive more of the Bread of Life. When the men came near to the entry leading to the supper room, they wanted to have a private talk with Joseph, “When they drew near to the steward of Joseph’s house, they talked with him at the door of the house…” Genesis 43:19 This would be like the Apostles of Jesus wanting to talk with Him about the dark mood in the atmosphere before eating supper with Him. Joseph’s brothers are sincerely sharing the situation of the money with Joseph that was found in their sack after buying grain. They still had all of their money in full measure but wasn’t aware that Joseph had put it there making the cost of the grain free. Their intent was to return all the money to Joseph, but Benjamin (the ravenous wolf) wasn’t involved in that reconciliatory conversation because he did not go to buy any grain (The grain representing the Gospel of Jesus Christ).
The brothers said, “O sir, we indeed came down the first time to buy grain; but it happened, when we came to the encampment, that we opened our sacks, and there, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; so we have brought it back in our hand. And we have brought down other money in our hands to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.”” Genesis 43:20-22 This is symbolic of the Apostles assuring Jesus Christ that their heart is full of the Bread of Life, which Jesus implanted into them. They are returning their abundance into the service of Christ and planning to receive more of the Bread of Life, everybody except Judas, the ravenous wolf who betrayed him. As followers of Jesus Christ, we want to share from the abundance of the Word of God which is in our heart and return it to our service to Christ and then to bring more of the Bread of Life into our heart.
Jesus Christ gives peace to those who commune with Him, and He reveals the conspiracy against Him. Joseph spoke words of peace to his brothers telling them not to be afraid. He let them know that the treasure in their sacks was from their God and the God of their father, Jacob. “But he said, “Peace be with you, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money.” Genesis 43:23a. That is symbolic of the peace Jesus Christ brought to the Apostles on that dark night, hours before His betrayal and crucifixion. Jesus let them know that the treasure in their heart is from God His Father, who is also their God. Jesus Christ has the money which is given through the Holy Spirit.
We serve God through Jesus Christ, and in these dark times He gives us peace and treasures of the heart through the Holy Spirit. There is still another brother of Joseph who is brought out, Simeon, whose last-days-meaning of his name (Genesis 49:1-27) is a cruel and wicked plotter of death among an assembly. “Then he brought Simeon out to them.” Genesis 43:23b. Simeon represents the conspiracy to have Jesus crucified and killed. Jesus revealed the conspiracy against Him to His Apostles at the last supper. Those who govern by the thing forming what people think, feel, do, and speak have dominated the churches and have scattered the followers of Jesus Christ. It is their conspiracy to eliminate Christianity and the teachings of the Bible from their social network.
We maintain humbleness in anticipation of the return of Jesus Christ. Joseph’s brothers are now gathered into the house where the supper was to be held, and they were given water to wash their feet, and their donkeys were fed as well. All twelve brothers would be together at the supper. “So the man brought the men into Joseph’s house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their donkeys feed.” Genesis 43:24 At the last supper of Jesus Christ, He shared the Water of Life with His Apostles as He spoke about the bread being His body and the wine being His blood. He was sharing with them about the sacrifice He would make on the Cross to atone for sin. Jesus also washed the Apostles feet just before they all ate together. Jesus was teaching them about humility and feeding them humbleness. In a sense, Jesus was feeding the “donkeys” because a donkey represents humility and humbleness.
During these last days, the followers of Jesus are to be humble towards other Believers and not to show any superiority over another. Humbleness is part of the walk of Holiness and is what it means to be in the house of Jesus, to devote our body as the home of the Holy Spirit. In humbleness, we offer our gifts to Jesus Christ as part of our communion with Him. When He returns, we will be eating with Him in the new heaven and new earth of the New Jerusalem and that is what we are preparing for today as we live for God through the Lord Jesus, “Then they made the present ready for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they would eat bread there.” Genesis 43:26
Jesus will return to accept our gifts of service, and He still cares for the Jews. When Jesus Christ returns, our offering to Him will be the service we rendered on this earth in His name, and we will enter into the Paradise of God with those gifts. We will bow down to Him in reverence to Him being Lord of lords and King of kings. That is represented when the brothers offered their gifts when entering the house when Joseph came home, “And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed down before him to the earth.” Genesis 43:26
Jesus Christ came to the Jews first to offer them Salvation, eternal life, and the Holy Spirit. Even to this day, as the nation of Israel stands in the Middle East, God is heart-broken that they rejected Him. They are still His original people and we have been adopted into God’s family, so we should have a humble and respectful attitude towards them.
When Jesus Christ was on this earth, He knew the days of the Jewish religious superiority were over, they were the “Old Man” in comparison to the “New Man” which He brought through the New Covenant. “Then he asked them about their well-being, and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?” Genesis 43:27 Even today, after the horrors of the Holocaust, the Israelites exist as the State of Israel, they are still alive and have not been exterminated from off the face of the planet, “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “I do not do this for your sake, O house of Israel, but for My holy name’s sake, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went.” Ezekiel 36:22 Jacob is the father of the twelve tribes of Israel, he is the father of all Israel, “And they answered, “Your servant our father is in good health; he is still alive.” And they bowed their heads down and prostrated themselves.” Genesis 43:28
Jesus Christ implicates Judas as the one who betrays Him. Benjamin and Joseph were the only biological sons of Jacob and Rachael, the other ten were born through surrogate mothers. The two were also the youngest. Joseph looked at Benjamin and asked his brothers if that was the younger brother, but he didn’t wait for a reply because he already knew the answer, “Then he lifted his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your younger brother of whom you spoke to me?” And he said, “God be gracious to you, my son.” Genesis 43:29 The last-days-meaning of Benjamin is a ravenous wolf who devours the prey in the morning, and he is at the supper. This represents Judas, the ravenous wolf who betrayed Jesus during the time of Christ’s last supper.
It was at that last supper that Jesus pointed out Judas by saying “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.” John 13:26 The compassion and love of Jesus is enormous, and He yearns for the Salvation of each person on this planet, and He weeps for those who betray Him, “Now his heart yearned for his brother; so Joseph made haste and sought somewhere to weep. And he went into his chamber and wept there.” Genesis 43:30 With the tears wiped from His face, and the mourning living in His heart, He was about to dip the bread and hand it to Judas, “Then he washed his face and came out; and he restrained himself, and said, “Serve the bread.” Genesis 43:3
At the supper table of Christ’s last supper. At the supper table, Joseph sat by himself, the eleven brothers sat together by themselves, and the Egyptians sat by themselves, “So they set him a place by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat food with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.” Genesis 43:32 In many of the paintings of the “Lord’s Supper,” Jesus sets at the center of the table as one by Himself, and the twelve Apostles bunched together, as depicted below,

Before the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the most prestigious person always sat at the most prominent place at the table. With that, certain populations of people were not permitted to mingle with other populations of people, they were not permitted to eat together. If they did, it would have severe consequences, such as banishment from society and even worse. Even so, Jesus Christ sat with people who mainstream society considered deplorable.
Many people want us to believe the days of social banishment are over, but they are not, it has only become more sophisticated. Those who live and govern for the global culture of the beast do not allow the followers of Jesus Christ to mingle with them. Anyone who is part of the anti-Christian global culture and establishes a cordial fellowship with Christians and Christianity are reprimanded and even banished from social approval.
Astonishment at Christ’s supper table. Jesus Christ was known to eat with tax-collectors and sinners of all types. He was the one who would have eaten with Egyptians and Jewish people, all mingled together, with no special seat of prominence. The brothers of Joseph were astonished that they were being treated to such a supper by someone who was the most powerful person in Egypt, next to Pharoah. “And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked in astonishment at one another.” Genesis 43:33
When Jesus was on earth, he not only astonished His own Apostles, but also the Pharisees, Sadducees, and many others by His willingness to mingle freely with whosoever. Jesus Christ gave Christianity/Gentiles a place to set at the table set for the family of God. The younger Christianity sets in the place of honor of the older Jewish Nation. The younger has received the blessings of the older because Christianity accepts Jesus Christ, and the Jewish people reject Him.
As followers of Jesus Christ, we are set apart from the ways of the world to serve Jesus Christ, but we never exclude anybody from the message of Salvation. Judas was sitting at the table with Jesus and all the other Apostles, and the traitor was greedy for the thirty pieces of silver. I can imagine Jesus handing that piece of sopped bread to the ravenous wolf as an extra serving while the brothers looked on, “Then he took servings to them from before him, but Benjamin’s serving was five times as much as any of theirs. So they drank and were merry with him.” Genesis 43:34 Of course, instead of acting out with jealousy or anger, knowing that the ravenous traitor got a little more from the hand of Jesus, the other Apostles made merry in the Spirit of Holiness and submission to God’s will.
“….to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets,“
‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
“I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.”
Revelation 2:24-25, 3:11
