There are several times that I can recall my co-workers encouraging me to leave work early with them. Our scheduled time to clock-out every night was midnight. Often, we would have our work duties done before that time and the other employees would leave early. I tried leaving early once but the manager questioned me, and I was advised that I need to call before I leave. Management always reviewed the security camera tape to see when we were leaving. The security cameras were conveniently linked to management’s cell phone app. Meanwhile, the other employees continued to leave early, and nothing was said to them. Once, when they asked me to leave early my reply was, “I’m waiting for Jesus to come back.” They rolled their eyes, didn’t say anything, but acted disgusted. I think that is a common reaction to the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
“They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people,
proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.”
Acts 4:2
When I focus on the afterlife it removes me from the entrapments that are everywhere in this world. If I’m told that I need to carry a weapon I reply that Jesus will take care of the problem when He comes back. When I’m approached with the attitude, “You only live once so feed your passions,” my response is that I’ll enjoy myself when Jesus returns. When I’m told that I’m isolating myself from the rest of the world my reply is, “Jesus is bringing the whole family together when He returns.” Even to me, I sound a little insincere when I say those things, but my intentions are 100% sincere, to separate myself from the cares of this world.
“Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.”
John 14:19
