Basic Instinct?

I like to think of myself as being someone who is doing the best that I can to be a decent human being. I like to keep my thoughts aligned with positive attitudes and to keep my feelings on a humanitarian level. Then, there are always those who never allow me to relate to spiritual qualities but always imply that who I am is found within basic instincts. They want me to believe that my life is not designed to be lived on a higher plane. In fact, they attack the life that I have through the teachings of Christ, but they support and even inflame basic instincts. The whole “nature vs. spirit vs. technology” thing is no new tactic, (the technology age is new compared to Paul’s era though),

“We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin…
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh.
For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.”
Romans 7:14,18

I think I’ve been hit with all the appeals that enliven the instincts and extinguishes the spirit. They are all wrapped up in a single slogan, “Get Wild”. You know, the “Me” and “I” attitude, the “eat drink and party” attitude, the “you have to fight for your freedom” attitude, the “sex drugs and rock-n-roll” attitude, the “get money” attitude and every other attitude that feeds into self-destruction and a short life. But I have found a happier alternative to strive for. One that espouses tame qualities such as love, kindness, goodwill, peace, meekness, gentleness, faith, joy, goodness, perseverance, self-control, and patience. I may be flesh and blood, but Christ Jesus has a little extra for me,

“What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?
Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
Romans 7:24-25

John 8 and Romans 7
