We all know about ribbon cuttings for a new plot of land that is dedicated for the purpose of laying a foundation of a building project. We can even recall three or four or more people in suits burying a shovel in the dirt as a ceremonial act of beginning a new building project. In very few of those, if any, will there be music, singing, praise and thanksgiving for the start of the project. After all, who are they publicly able to worship for the coming foundation? Which politician, which millionaire, which businessman, or which philanthropist? Who can they turn to and say, “his mercy endures forever.” However, when the foundations of the Lord was laid, there was music, singing, praising, thanksgiving because they knew His mercy endures forever. Their worship for the laying of the foundation of the Lord was directed to One, and that was God.
Any foundation that humans build by their own efforts is not going to solicit the same attitude of praise and worship as a foundation built of God. Mankind is not able to remove the sin that separates us from adoration for God. The foundation of the Lord is built specifically to bury sin of the flesh because that sin is spiritual death. Life in the Spirit comes when we build upon the foundation of the Lord. That foundation is laid, and the foundation is the Cross of Christ! On that foundation our spirit is full of singing, music, praise and thanksgiving. What Christ did for us on the Cross is a sign that God’s mercy endures forever, from generation to generation! Everything we do in life endures only in the Spirit, and that Spirit is the foundation of the Lord. We cannot build a life on a foundation of hatred, ill-intentions, cruel acts, conflict, aggression, harshness, unfaithfulness, pessimism, evilness, being out-of-control, and fatal intent. When Christ is the Chief Cornerstone, the foundation is built to line up with God’s Spirit. In Christ, we can have fellowship in accordance with God’s Love, Kindness, Goodwill, Peace, Meekness, Gentleness, Faithfulness, Joy, Goodness, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Patience.
The foundation of the Lord is laid and it is to reconcile sinners to Himself through the Cross of Christ. There is rejoicing in Heaven when a person accepts Christ as the Chief Cornerstone. There is music and singing and praising and thanksgiving because the mercy of the Lord endures forever. We have an eternal Home in the New Jerusalem. Thank God, thank God, the foundation of the Lord is Laid.
“And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise the LORD, after the ordinance of David king of Israel. And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endures for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.” Ezra 3:10-11
Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. No one is perfect, we are all sinners, and what Christ did for us on the Cross is the cure! That simple, let’s build on the foundation of the Lord!
