Spring is a beautiful time of year with the renewal of life. Also, Fall is a beautiful time of year as the trees flaunt beautiful colors. When I think of the word, “flaunt,” I think more of Fall. In an act of defiance to the coming Winter, the trees display their colorful leaves to provoke envy or admiration. The flaunting of that beauty soon falls from the branches and the trees are left bare. Spiritually, we can have an inner source of life like Spring, or be flaunting an external beauty that is very short lived.
I often see people as if they are Autumn trees flaunting their external leaves of beauty. They wear painted on smiles, their hair is beautifully groomed, the clothes are very appealing to look at, and their tax records prove that they give charitable contributions. However, on the inside they are not filled with the substance that gives spiritual life. They do not blossom with spiritual fruit. As they shed their external image of beauty, an unpleasant and undesirable character is laid bare. We should strive to be like the beauty of Spring. A time filled with the blossoming of the life of fruit, flowers, grain, and every sort of new birth. Not just the beauty of leaves about ready to fall.
Christ said, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” To fall into the trap of living by external images is as if a thief has stole our internal source of spiritual life. Christ in us restores the internal Spring of life and gives it abundantly. May the fruit of grace, peace, and love be from the life of Spring in us.
